Lao Huo Tang, an esteemed name in Singapore's vibrant F&B scene, embarked on a bold venture into the Malaysian market, setting its roots in Gurney Plaza Mall, Penang, in 2019. This expansion marked their first foray into Malaysia, aiming to bring a taste of their diverse culinary offerings, including Local, Chinese, Indonesian, and Western cuisines, to the Malaysian audience.
The design of Lao Huo Tang in Gurney Plaza was a testament to their strong branding, deeply rooted in oriental motifs and aesthetics. Iconic red cylindrical lanterns adorned the dining area, a breathtaking sight as 56 of these signature lanterns gracefully hovered above patrons. Here, diners not only savored the flavors of old-school soups beloved by the Malaysian Chinese community but also immersed themselves in an ambiance that seamlessly blended tradition with contemporary dining.
This project was more than just a design endeavor; it was a comprehensive journey into the intricacies of the F&B industry. It marked my first design and build project in this domain, offering invaluable lessons in collaborating with M&E consultants, sub-contractors, LPG contractors, fire protection systems, POS systems, and other integral components specific to F&B operations.
The project came with its own unique challenges. In line with shopping mall regulations in Malaysia, renovations could only be conducted during non-operational hours. This necessitated a shift in the standard working schedule, with a transition to night shifts from 10 pm to 6 am. It was a testament to the project's dedication and determination to deliver excellence under stringent conditions.
Unfortunately, the project's journey was unexpectedly cut short by the global pandemic of 2020. The coronavirus outbreak forced the closure of Lao Huo Tang, Gurney Plaza, leaving behind not just memories of culinary delights but also the lessons learned during its creation.
This endeavor was a significant learning curve, shaping my capabilities and resilience to face the challenges that lay ahead in the dynamic and demanding F&B industry. While it was a short-lived venture, it left an enduring mark on my journey as a designer, equipping me with the skills and fortitude to navigate the road ahead.
